Dear friends,
I hope this email finds you well.
In the past few years, I have been working with the AWAM Foundation (www.awamfoundation.org), a Buddhism based charity organization, to help an orphanage/elder shelter in Tibet. We started about three years ago setting up a no-kill yak farm for the orphans and elders to provide them the daily nutrition. We started with 15 yaks and now the herd has grown to 42 yaks with some additional purchase through the years and seven babies born to the herd. This is approaching our goal of having a herd of about 50 yaks so that the shelter can be completely self sustainable on food supplies. One of our main priorities, aside from helping the shelter to be self sustainable in terms of getting food from the yak farm, is to set up a health clinic for them and the local Tibetan community. Recently an opportunity arose for us to purchase a property for this purpose (please see below the original appeal letter from Khenchen Lama, the founder of the orphanage shelter, for more information on this).I'm very exciting about this opportunity and believe a lot of good can be come out from this. I'm writing to invite you to be part of this campaign with your kind help if you can.
Blessings,Kit

To a Mountain in Tibet By Colin Thubron
Mount Kailas is the most sacred of the world's mountains - holy to one fifth of humanity. Isolated beyond the central Himalayas, it is claimed by myth to be the source of the universe created from cosmic waters and the mind of Brahma. This book tells the stories of exiles and of eccentric explorers from the West.
Dear friends,
ReplyDeleteAs you may know, one of the main priorities of AWAM Foundation is the establishment of a health clinic for orphans and elders. 146 orphans aged seven to 18 years and 27 elder people have virtually no access to medical care because of the remote location of the orphanage. Over the last few weeks an opportunity arose to purchase a house which could serve as a health clinic for the orphans, elders and the Tibetan community in the area.
The house is located 30 minutes drive from the orphanage, is in a safe location and has 13 rooms. I have been in contact with a Tibetan doctor and my students in the area who viewed the house and confirmed its suitability for this purpose. In addition to the Tibetan doctor, I have two students with proper training in Tibetan medicine who could work at the clinic. They would provide free medical care for the orphans and elders. The cost of the house is $20,000 and I would be very grateful for any contributions towards this purpose. If we succeed in the fund-raising efforts, the clinic will have a special wall dedicated to all the supporters of the clinic where donor's names and messages will be displayed if they wish so.
The current owners are supportive of the cause that the house would serve as a health clinic and therefore are offering the house to us for early purchase at a special price. They are withholding the listing of the house in the open market until the end of March to allow enough time for our response. If a definitive offer cannot be provided by then, the house will be put on the market for purchase and the price will go up since it is well built and favorably located. Therefore it's important to get the funds ready before the end of the holding period (March 2011) and I urge for your generous help and support.
Thank you,
Khenchen Lama Rinpoche
