As Committee Member of Engineering Physics Group (EPG) I am recommending the IoP group which is supporting those who work on the interface between physics and engineering. The Group aims to facilitate professional development and support; promote the public awareness of 'Science, Engineering and Technology' (SET) and promote physics as a subject at school, as a basis for careers in both physics and engineering

Also I am looking forward to hearing from your suggestions and opinions, as you are very welcome to join to the EPG group within the IoP.

A note from your Chair: Chris Bell
ReplyDeletewould like to extend a warm welcome to all members of the Engineering
Physics Group as we move into 2011. We start the year having had a
productive time during 2010.
We held two joint events in July with the South-West Branch of the Institute.
Our visit to the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car Technical Centre in Bristol was
a particularly enjoyable success. A large group of us gathered together in
Bristol on a hot July afternoon for a presentation from the Bloodhound Chief
Engineer about one of the most inspiring engineering projects taking place in
the UK today. We also held an evening lecture about the newest Boeing
passenger aircraft, the 787 ‘Dreamliner’.
We have enlarged the group committee size, with the aim of improving our
effectiveness and our ability to engage with the wider membership. We now
have connections with the local branches that account for approximately 80%
of Engineering Physics Group members.
As the membership of the Engineering Physics Group is widely distributed
across the country, it would be difficult for us all to meet together at events
targeting only EPG members. Consequently, the committee is planning to
organise future activities in a new way. Our intention is to make it easier for
members to take part in EPG-orientated events.
We will be organising events in greater numbers, and we will endeavour to
run them at times and in locations that accommodate the additional needs of
the many EPG members who work in Industry.

We will run events in conjunction with local branches whenever we can. It
was clear from the events held in 2010 that joint events deliver many benefits
in terms of improved participant numbers and networking opportunities.
During 2011 your committee will be working to organise events connected
with some of the aspects of engineering that the UK can do so well. These
will include advanced manufacturing and the space, aerospace and defence
sectors. We will be notifying members by email in advance of each event.
You will notice that this edition of the newsletter has expanded somewhat. It
now includes more details on the activities of the Group and the Committee.
In addition, it has a number of extra article features that may be of interest to
engineering physicists. I would like to thank Dr Paul Bartlett (EPG
Secretary/Treasurer) for his effort in collating and editing this group
newsletter.
The committee would be interested to know if you have articles that you
would like to submit for inclusion in the next edition of the newsletter.
Finally, please feel free to make contact with anyone from the committee if
there is something that you would particularly like the EPG to do or organise.
